Preserving the Art of Czech Marionette Craftsmanship in Prague

Our traditional marionette puppet workshop in Prague with carved puppets at various stages of completion
Hands-On Learning

Carving Your First Puppet

We've been teaching traditional puppet carving since 2019. It's not just about learning a skill — it's about connecting with centuries of Czech folk tradition.

When you walk into our workshop, you're stepping into something real. We don't rush. Each student learns proper wood selection, tool handling, and the fundamental cuts that define marionette character. The process takes patience, but that's where the magic happens.

Our carving sessions start with basics — understanding grain direction, working with lime wood, developing the confident hand movements that separate amateur from skilled. By week three, you'll see your puppet's personality emerging from the block.

Crestovtrex s.r.o. focuses on one thing: teaching you the right way. No shortcuts, no mass-produced templates. Just traditional Czech methods that've worked for generations.

What Our Workshops Cover

Carving Fundamentals

Learn proper tool handling, wood preparation, and the core techniques for shaping facial features that bring your puppet to life.

Painting & Expression

Master the art of puppet painting to convey emotion and character. We cover traditional pigments, brush techniques, and authentic period styles.

Stringing & Movement

Assemble joints, thread control strings, and practice making your puppet move naturally. It's the final step that transforms wood into character.

Prague's Marionette Heritage

Prague isn't just our location — it's our inspiration. The city's puppet theater tradition runs deep, and we're committed to keeping these techniques alive through hands-on teaching.

Czech marionettes aren't mass-produced novelties. They're artworks with personality, crafted to move in specific ways, designed to tell stories on stage. Every carved feature, every string placement, every paint stroke matters.

We've studied traditional Prague puppet makers, learned from local masters, and built our curriculum around methods that've proven effective for over a century. When you train with us, you're learning from that legacy.

That's what sets crestovtrex s.r.o. apart. We're not teaching contemporary art. We're teaching a craft that connects you directly to Prague's theatrical heritage.

How We Structure Our Classes

1

Foundation Week

We start with material knowledge and tool introduction. You'll understand wood types, grain patterns, and why certain tools are essential. No one picks up a chisel until they're ready.

2

Technique Development

Weeks two through four focus on core carving techniques. You'll work on practice pieces first — noses, chins, ears — before committing to your full puppet head design.

3

Character Creation

Once you've mastered the basics, you'll carve your own puppet head with personality. We guide you through proportions, expression, and the subtle details that make your character unique.

4

Finishing & Animation

Painting, stringing, joint assembly, and control bar construction. By the end, you'll have a fully functional puppet ready to perform. That's the real payoff.
