Do I need prior carving experience?
Not at all. Most of our students are complete beginners. We start with the absolute basics — how to hold tools, wood grain direction, basic cuts — and build from there. If you've never carved before, that's actually where we prefer to start.
What materials and tools will I need?
We provide most carving tools and quality wood during workshops. You'll learn which tools work best and can gradually build your own collection. For painting, basic acrylic paints and brushes are all you need — we'll recommend specific types during class.
How long does it take to complete a puppet?
A basic puppet typically takes 8-12 weeks of regular practice — maybe 2-3 hours per week. Carving the head is usually 3-4 weeks, joints and body 2-3 weeks, then stringing and painting. Everyone works at their own pace though.
Can I work on my own projects between classes?
Absolutely. We encourage it. Many students work on their puppets at home and bring them to class for feedback. This is actually how most carvers improve — consistent practice between structured lessons.
Are workshops suitable for children?
We offer age-appropriate classes starting around age 10. Younger kids can participate with adult supervision. The techniques are the same, but we adjust tool sizes and project complexity for smaller hands and attention spans.
What's included in each workshop session?
Each session includes instruction on specific techniques, hands-on practice with guidance, individual feedback on your work, and access to tools and materials. You'll work on your own puppet while instructors circulate to help everyone.
